In collaboration with Gruppo Sugar, Music Box Records is pleased to present for the first time on CD the original motion picture soundtrack of Tais-toi quand tu parles (Zitto quando parli) composed and conducted by Armando Trovajoli.

Released in 1981, Tais-toi quand tu parles is often considered as the first film of director Philippe Clair’s second period, a period dominated by the presence, in top billing position, of Aldo Maccione, at the time at the peak of his career in France (thanks to directors like Claude Lelouch and Pierre Richard). Beyond this, Philippe Clair’s film was an enormous success at the box office in France. In addition to the presence of prestigious cinematographer Mario Vulpiani in the credits, Philippe Clair decided to work with the great composer Armando Trovajoli, faithful collaborator of Dino Risi (Scent of a Woman/Profumo di Donna, 1974) and, above all, of Ettore Scola (We All Loved Each Other So Much/C’eravamo tanto amati, 1974; Ugly, Dirty and Bad/Brutti, sporchi e cattivi, 1976). Famous for his ''Mediterranean humour'', thus Philippe Clair very judiciously surrounded himself with a predominantly Italian team, particularly up to the task of giving shape to his craziest delirium, as cult director of La Grande Java (1970), Le Grand Fanfaron (1975) and Le Führer en folie (1973).

Tais-toi quand tu parles tells the story of Giacomo, a daydreaming anti-hero charged by the French secret service to conclude a Tunisian mission begun by James, a real secret agent assumed dead, and also Giacomo’s double. Like an Italian Orpheus, Giacomo passes through the looking glass in search of his Eurydice, brought to life here by the splendid Edwige Fenech, in the role of Béatrix.
Armando Trovajoli’s enchanting music expresses Giacomo’s aspirations for an idyllic life, as well as his impossible desire for Béatrix. Situated a million miles from reality and the everyday, the Italian composer’s score contributes to giving to Philippe Clair’s film its dreamlike rhythm, as well as reinforcing its subtle poetry.

Armando Trovajoli affirmed that Philippe Clair’s work was more musical than cinematographic. Like a jazz musician in an improvising trance of counter-melodies at once chaotic and absurd, Philippe Clair transgresses with abandon cinematic and comic codes, making of his films a rhythmic succession of delirious situations and dialogues, which no other genre of cinema resembles. This sacrilege of artwork – closer to a pop art approach, or to certain cartoons or examples of slapstick – is translated perfectly by Trovajoli, whose score banishes all forms of classicism and all grandiose conventions, in favour of an original, elegant and “pop” colouring.

Limited to 350 units, this World Premiere CD release has been fully remastered from the session tapes by Claudio Fuiano and includes an 8-page booklet with liner notes by Nicolas Magenham, discussing the film and the score.
